Hey party peeps!
This week is RAINBOW WEEK and today I’m sharing HOW TO CREATE & USE FEATHER BOA BACKDROPS! It’s super easy…no crafting involved! I’ve been using feather boa backdrops for years now to create fabulous backdrops for tables as well as for photo booths! The textures and vibrant colors of the feathers are so unexpected and give your event that wow factor that your guests will remember.
HOW DID SHE DO THAT?
There is nothing to it! You will just need 6′ feather boas and a backdrop stand. Scroll down to the end of the post to see where you can get these.
USE FEATHER BOAS TO CREATE A TABLE BACKDROP!
HOW DID SHE DO THAT?
1. Setup a backdrop stand and place behind your table
Be sure you use a stand as wide as your table. If your table is wider than your stand (as seen in this photo) use something tall on either side of your table to fill in the empty space like I did with these balloons.
2. Lay your feather boas over the rail
You will need atleast 24 boas to cover the back of a 4-6′ table. Place them close together to prevent unsightly gaps. Once they are on the rail you can pull them down to make them even with the color next to each one and to make sure the bottom of the boas extend just a little bit behind the table for a finished look.
That’s it!
LOOK FOR LESS GIRLFRIEND TIP: Want a less expensive alternative to a backdrop stand? You can also use a garment rack! Which is what I used in this Pokemon Candy Bar photo with a 4′ table. They don’t cost a lot (around $14) and are available in local stores like Target & Walmart.
GIRLFRIEND DESIGN TIP: If you use a garment rack, note that they are only 4.5′ tall and 3.5′ wide. I wanted my backdrop to be higher, so I placed it on top of a large box to elevate it. Be sure that the tablecloth on the table in front of it is floor-length so you won’t be able to see the box underneath.
USE FEATHER BOAS TO CREATE A PHOTO BOOTH BACKDROP!
HOW DID SHE DO THAT?
1. Setup a backdrop stand
It is important that the stand is atleast 7′ tall which is enough to accommodate the height of your guests so that your backdrop doesn’t cut off in the photos and it will allow for your 6′ feather boas to fully extend from top to bottom.
LOOK FOR LESS GIRLFRIEND TIP: If you have an empty wall large enough, you can use clear 3M Command Hooks to hang each boa on the wall. That way you don’t have to have a stand at all. Saving LOTS of money as backdrop stands are pricey…around $385!
PRO PARTY PLANNER TIP: Backdrop stands are a MUST HAVE ITEM in your inventory! I have a 8’x10′ one that I use regularly. You can adjust it’s width to cover up to an 8′ table AND it’s height is adjustable it’s tall enough to use as a photo backdrop holder. Plus they set up in minutes, break down completely and store in it’s own carrying case making it super easy to store and transport! Definitely worth the investment!
2. Tie the boas on to the top rail of the backdrop stand.
For this you will need the full length of the boas so you can’t drape them over the rail…you have to secure them to it. Each boa has a white yarn loop at each end. I use black twist ties to secure them to the top of the rail being sure to hide the white yarn for a clean professional look.
GIRLFRIEND DESIGN TIP: Be sure to trim off the white yarn at the bottom end of the feather boa for a clean look.
PRO PARTY PLANNER TIP: The feathers will be EVERYWHERE when you are done setting it up as well as when you break it down. Make sure you have a hand-held vacuum with you…TRUST ME…this is a LIFESAVER…do not attempt to use a broom as it just blow the feathers all over the place and you will be chasing them all around the room 😉
That’s it! Place some photo props and/or a cardboard standup near the backdrop and you have a decor wow factor as well a fun party activity!

Feather boas come in all kinds of colors so you can really get creative with how you use them. Here I used it as a table backdrop for my daughter’s RIO party which was PERFECT as the main decor element was of course blue feathers!!!!
