Hey party peeps! Have you seen Big Hero 6 yet? It is FANTASTIC! I saw it for the first time when the DVD released on February 24th and was inspired to host a BIG HERO 6 MOVIE NIGHT PARTY for my kids and nephews. My youngest son hadn’t seen it yet so it was truly a premiere party for him. When hosting a movie night party I like to include elements inspired by the movie so it’s imperative to watch it ahead of time so you can make sure your ideas relate to the movie to add to the experience of watching it. Check out how I incorporated elements from the actual movie to create an awesome party and how I used wall decals to decorate areas of my house which is a easy way to add temporary themed decor to your house.
GIRLFRIEND TIP When space in your home is limited, you may not have wall space to bring in large backdrops to set the scene for your party’s theme. In this case, I like to use temporary removeable wall decals like I did here with this large Baymax decal that created a wow-factor backdrop without having to hang anything or use a backdrop stand.
SAN FRANSOKYO SUSHI BAR
The movie takes place in a fictional city called San Fransokyo which is a mix between San Francisco and Tokyo. The Tokyo influence is present in the movie and the main characters are all engineers and scientists so I wanted to come up with a cool food that the kids could actually assemble that was Japanese. SAN FRANSOKYO SUSHI BAR was the perfect idea! My kids like California Rolls but have never made them at home, so I thought it would be cool to have us make our own California Rolls. It was actually easy enough for the kids to do too.
Here’s What You Need:
– seaweed wrappers (Nori)
– sticky white rice
– imitation crab meat sticks
– cucumber
– avocado
– soy sauce
– bamboo mat
– plastic wrap
– sharp knife
Here’s How You Do It:
– Peel and cut a large cucumber into sticks.
– Make your short-grain rice (let cool atleast 2 hours) or use a pint of take-out sticky white rice.
– Lay the bamboo mat flat on the counter (horizontally), place a layer of plastic wrap on top of the mat and then top with one seaweed wrapper.
– Spread a layer of white rice to cover the entire seaweed wrapper. Be sure to keep a bowl of water handy to dip your fingers into so the rice doesn’t stick to your fingers.
– Flip the seaweed wrapper over so that the rice layer is on the bottom. The plastic wrap should stay on the bamboo mat.
– Place 1 row of imitation crab leg, cucumber stick & avocado on top of the rice layer lengthwise on one end of the seaweed wrapper
– Begin to roll the California Roll being sure to press it firmly together as you roll it and not wrapping the plastic wrap in it.
– Once it’s completely rolled, press the roll firmly with the bamboo mat then gently remove the mat and the plastic wrap.
– Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6 pieces. Be sure to dip the knife into water before you slice it to prevent the knife from sticking to the insides of the roll.
– Serve with soy sauce or spicy mayo & eat with chopsticks.
BAYMAX FAVOR BAR!
I love to setup a movie themed favor bar for my movie night parties, so I headed to Walmart to order Big Hero 6 toys like this Flying Baymax toy with Hiro Hamada figure, Baymax Fist and Mask sets, Rocket Fist toys and Baymax plush toys that the kids LOVED! Once the movie was over the kids all suited up and had an impromptu Baymax fist fight. Baymax Rocket Fists were flying everywhere! (they are made from a soft foam so they don’t hurt) Riley had a ball with the Flying Baymax toy that also makes cool noises and Hiro attaches to the back of Baymax magnetically just like in the movie. So fun to watch the kids re-enact scenes from the movie!
GIRLFRIEND TIP Use toys as a table centerpiece. This Flying Baymax toy with Hiro figure was perfect as they stand on their own and was perfect paired with themed wall decals behind it. This toy was a surprise for my younger kids who were more than excited!
When hosting a movie night with guests, I always pick up an extra copy of the movie to give to my guests as a take home favor. The Big Hero 6 DVDs I found at Walmart who also had an exclusive double pack that includes a bonus DVD “The Science of Big Hero 6” which explores the science behind the many tech inventions seen in the movie. I thought my tween daughter who loves STEM would love to watch this too. The DVD also includes a digital movie on Vudu while supplies last! Simply scan your receipt using the Savings Catcher in the Walmart app. Then look for a message on your phone or email. Now you can watch Big Hero 6 on any device! Which is perfect for us as my kids are always watching movies on our iPads.
BAYMAX BAKERY!
The main character in the movie, was a 14 year old boy Hiro who lived above a bakery cafe owned by his aunt. Instead of a typical candy table that I normally setup for all my parties, I decided this time to create a Bakery Bar full of baked goods in keeping with the movie’s theme.
GIRLFRIEND TIP Be sure to have bakery bags or boxes on hand so that guests can take desserts home with them. Also, be sure to hang on to the original containers of all the baked goods that you display so that you can easily transfer them back into their original containers to keep them fresh for days to come.
My daughters and Hiro himself in the movie referred to Baymax as a “walking marshmallow” so that inspired the “Make Your Own Baymax” activity with Jet-Puffed Marshmallows and black sparkle gel where the kids could make their own Baymax marshmallow skewers. I also drew Baymax’s face on the front of marshmallows, placed them on lollipop sticks and used them to create Babymax cupcake toppers.
My kids watched Big Hero 6 an additional 4 times the day after we watched it for movie night! I also must admit that I too have watched it an additional time. It was really good and has such a great storyline and lesson. As a mom, I feel great about my kids watching this movie that inspires them to “BE MORE”, “HELP PEOPLE”, and not be afraid to imagine what can be and then having the motivation and drive to make it.
HAVE YOU SEEN BIG HERO 6? WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT IT?
Cheers!
Tonya
