Hey party peeps! Day of the Dead is my FAVORITE theme to decorate for Halloween! I just LOVE all the bright colors and the time to reflect and remember all of our loved ones who have passed on. Today I’m going to share with you HOW TO MAKE A DAY OF THE DEAD HALLOWEEN WREATH! You guys already know that I am all about simple and easy DIY projects and this one is definitely that AND looks amazing! Click here to see this entire tutorial on YouTube! Crafting has become one of my favorite things to do with my daughter and even if you aren’t that crafty, I encourage you to atleast try making simple things with your kids. The Mommy & Me time is PRICELESS and don’t worry, Michaels even carries craft kits with step-by-step instructions for some projects so you can do a craft project with your kids with no worries.
NOW…LET’S GET CRAFTING!
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED:
– 12″ foam wreath
– 1 roll of black shelf liner
– Bunches of bright flowers
– Acrylic paint (various colors) & paint brush
– Wooden Day of the Dead sugar skull
– Sharpie markers
– Plastic spiders
– Hot glue gun
Now that we have all of our supplies, we are ready to get started!
Step 1: Cut the shelf liner into 4 strips & wrap them tightly around the wreath
As you are tightly wrapping the shelf liner around the wreath, be sure to overlap it a bit to ensure none of the green of the foam wreath shows through. You will also need to secure each end of the strips with hot glue to keep them tightly wound.
GIRLFRIEND TIP: You can use ribbon for this part if you want, but I just love how stretchy the shelf liner is and it has such a great texture that reminds me of sticky spiderwebs!
Step 2: Color the Day of the Dead sugar skull & attach to the wreath
Using Sharpie markers, color the wooden Day of the Dead sugar skull. Attach the sugar skull to the bottom front of the wreath with hot glue.
Step 3: Remove the flowers from their stems & attach to the wreath
Pull the flower heads from the stems. Trim the stem sticking out of the flower head so it’s flush to the flower bottom. Using the hot glue, attach the flower on the right hand side of the wreath above the sugar skull.
Step 4: Paint a plastic spider & attach to a flower
This was my daughter, Faith’s idea..which I LOVE! She happens to be the ultimate DIYer and is ALWAYS making things! She actually has her own YouTube channel where she shares all her DIY Tutorials. If you’d like to see some of her work, check out and subscribe to her YouTube channel here. Using her signature splatter paint technique she painted the spider in cool colors and hot glued it on to a flower. Super cute!
That’s it!
Super easy and cute! Perfect for my door this Halloween!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HALLOWEEN THEME?

I love the bright colored flowers you added to your wreath. The Day of the Dead theme is a great look and works perfectly for the Halloween season!
That is amazing. I never would think to use shelf liner this way. I certainly would not think to use a wooden cutout so colorfully! Genius. (After halloween, take the skull off and enjoy year-round, right?)
I absolutely LOVE it. I think it came out awesome. I want one, too!
I have always loved how the day of dead thing is done by bright colors. It is so cool.
This looks stunning! I wish DOTD was more celebrated here in the UK, for Brits it’s not really classed as a dress-up holiday at least.
Cool wreath! I love it… except for the spiders! I don’t like them, real or fake! 😉
I always make homemade wreaths for different seasons and holidays. This one is really pretty and fairly simple too.
WOW STUNNING post! I mean geesh you really showed and told great detail here even someone with no crafting ability like myself can do this now! Love all the colors – your photos are perfect!
I didn’t even know about day of the dead until a year ago when we were in California and I saw all these people with candy skulls painted on their faces at Disneyland. Such an interesting holiday! Love the wreath… it looks great!
This is amazing! And your photos are so on point and full of color. I have never made anything like this, but you did a gorgeous job.
I have got to start trying these crafts and not just admiring them from my computer desktop. Love the colors on this and so festive but not scary.
More and more people are celebrating Day of the Dead then ever! Great wreath and I’m loving the table set up.
My kids want to have a party this year. I was thinking it’s too late now, but maybe it really isn’t.
Another beautiful Project from Tanya .. I’ve seen that foam wreath in many diy projects and i would say its definitely handy to have a few of them around
Love this! Super cute. Love that your daughter helped with this project!
Darling!!! The first thing I thought of when I saw the skull was how it reminded me of when I was growing up in the 60’s – it’s the colors you all used. Fantastic tutorial too!
Now that is something I could try making and it would turn out nothing like yours. 🙂 I love it though and her idea of that spider was awesome!
