HOW DID SHE DO THAT?
First things first…BEFORE you attempt to design a party around a movie, you must first watch it! That way you can get all kinds of ideas for the decor and activities for the kids to do that complement the movie.
SET THE SCENE — BOO YORK, BOO YORK BOO-TIQUE!
As many of you know, I am an east-coast girl—born & raised and have spent lots of time in NYC. This movie is set in Monster High’s version of New York City— BOO YORK CITY! I was so excited to put my urban spin on a Monster High party theme! Nothing says Boo York than taxis! So I had to include a cardboard taxi standup in party’s decor. Of course, I started with a brick backdrop that totally set the scene for my Boo York city “BOO-tique!” Just as the ghoul-friends in the movie go shopping for fabulous outfits and accessories…so will your guests. The girls visited the Boo-tique and got all glammed up in spider bow tutus, custom “I love Boo York” t-shirts, mini top hat headbands by Cupcake Wishes and Birthday Dreams and of course…gold stunna shades…inspired by the gold sunglasses that Deuce Gorgon wears in the movie. This BOO-tique table also did double duty to hold the party favors for the guests. They all went home with a Boo York, Boo York DVD, their outfits and a Boo York doll of their choice that I used in the decor. Since I used the dolls in the decor I like to display the brush and diary that came with each doll on the table for added decor.
GIRLFRIEND TIP: For all my DIYers out there! The t-shirts were easy to make using a design I created on my computer that matched the Boo York theme and iron-on transfer paper. Super easy and adds a custom element to your party favors! I also used jumbo sized black furry chenille stems to create a Catty Noir cat tail belt! The kids LOVED these! Just wrap the stem around the waist and twist to secure and then snip off the end leaving plenty for the tail! That’s it! Who says DIY has to be hard! AND…my daughter, Faith is always getting into character for my parties and gets so excited to come up with her whole look. She started off with a fabulous Catty Noir costume from Birthday Express and from there finished off her look with makeup. Click here to check out her tutorial on You Tube on how to dress up like Catty Noir.
SING & DANCE WITH CATTY NOIR!
Boo York, Boo York is a MUSICAL! I know, right! How awesome is that! There is actually an entire soundtrack full of amazing songs that I haven’t been able to get out of my head…it’s that good. It’s full of contemporary dance and rap music that are sure to get your kids ready to bust some moves. During the movie, my daughter and her friends kept getting up and dancing around whenever one of the songs came on! After the movie, I already had the soundtrack downloaded on my iPod from iTunes and had this awesome Monster High karaoke machine from Toys”R”Us that I could connect it to so that the girls could sing all of their favorite Boo York songs while I, of course, snapped away with my camera. Get ready moms…this is sure to be priceless camera-ready moments!
BOO YORK COSMIC CANDY BAR featuring ASTRANOVA!
The movie ends with a dance party where Astranova makes her debut at a Gala in Boo York. Inspired by this, end your party on a sweet note with this Cosmic Candy Bar featuring Astranova dancing high above the table in the Monster High Boo York, Boo York Floatation Station playset.
As part of the “cosmic” design, offer candy that shimmer and shine like rock candy and metallic foil wrapped chocolates. Then for a custom touch, add a few custom designed desserts like these amazing BOO YORK iced cookies by Auntie Bea’s Bakery, city fondant toppers by Lynlee’s Petite Cakes and microphone topped chocolate covered oreos and gold glittered cake pops by Sparkling Sweets Boutique! Each guest filled these super cute custom favor boxes by Glamorously Sweet Designs to take home all the sweet treats.
