Hey party peeps! IT’S TIME TO GET DECORATING THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME FOR CHRISTMAS! Okay, I know, it’s not Thanksgiving yet, but I just can’t wait! I was inspired by Big Lot’s “Decorate Your Home for the Holidays Week” which is this week (November 16-22) to transform the front of our house for Christmas! As most of you know I am a new homeowner and as a renter for years, I couldn’t put up outdoor decorations on my home. This was such a downer! I LOVE the look of outdoor twinkle lights and I have ALWAYS wanted a light up reindeer in the yard. It has always been top of my list for when I became a homeowner! This year, I am READY and putting up the decorations now so I have plenty of time to enjoy them and be one less thing to do when December comes and the holiday craziness begins!
I wasn’t the only one excited either! The kids were so excited. Riley asked me last weekend if we could decorate our house this Christmas. I was a bit taken aback as I normally go all out decorating the inside of our home for Christmas so when I asked her what she meant, she said that she wanted to decorate the OUTSIDE of the house! OH YES! Her face lit up and off to Big Lots I went to pick out amazing outdoor holiday decor for our new home…FINALLY!
Today I’m going to share with you HOW I DECORATED MY HOME WITH OUTDOOR HOLIDAY DECOR FROM BIG LOTS!
LET IT GLOW…LET IT GLOW…LET IT GLOW!
This year, I am decorating the inside of my house with a neutral color palette of creams, browns, gold, silver and champagne. I really wanted the outdoor decor to reflect the look and feel of what’s to expect when you walk in to my home. I purchased our Christmas Tree from Big Lots a few years ago and always admired their selection of outdoor decor, but had to always just admire it and then leave it at the store! NOT THIS TIME! I was overjoyed to be able to not only admire, but buy whatever outdoor decor I wanted. And…they had EXACTLY what I wanted. Be still my heart…they had not only a light-up reindeer that I’ve wanted for years…but a family of light-up reindeer and..wait for it…wait for it…in GOLD! PERFECT! To finish out the look I was going for I picked up 2 sets of light-up outdoor gift boxes, a few gold snowflake ornaments and extension cords and power outlets to hook it all up.
GIRLFRIEND TIP: I was so excited to go to Big Lots of pick out the decor, that I left my hubby at home so I could just relish the moment alone. BIG MISTAKE! Once I picked out all the items I wanted I was snapped back to the reality that I had NO IDEA what I would need to hook it all up to create the twinkly wonderland in my head. Luckily, the staff at Big Lots were amazingly helpful and helped me figure out exactly what I needed. To make it even easier, they had a full display of outdoor extension cords separated from the indoor ones so I couldn’t mess up! Hubby was impressed when I came home with everything we needed to hook it all up! Thanks Big Lots! Wifey SCORE!
OUTDOOR HOLIDAY DECORATING TIPS!
TIP #1: BALANCE YOUR DECOR!
Place a grouping of light-up decor on either side of your front door entry. This provides balance to your decor. I like to mix it up and use 2 different types of decor. Here I used a tall grouping of reindeers on one side and a shorter grouping of gift boxes on the other side.
TIP #2: GET CREATIVE WITH YOUR WREATH!
I wanted to do something different on my front door than the standard wreath, so while in the ornament aisle, I spotted these jumbo-sized gold sparkle snowflake ornaments and immediately knew they would the perfect bit of sparkle I wanted to greet me and my guests when they approached my front door!
GIRLFRIEND TIP: Since these are ornaments, they already had a string at the top that I just hung on to my door’s wreath holder. To make it longer, I just hung the second snowflake on to the end of the first one. I love how it turned out…how about you?
TIP #3: NO-TOOLS REQUIRED DECORATIONS!
I’m ALL ABOUT easy decorating and these outdoor decorations setup in minutes! They are already strung with lights and all I had to do was pop each piece into place. No tools needed.
GIRLFRIEND TIP: I almost forgot to stake down my decor once we had it all in place outside! UH-OH! Potential FAIL! Hubby reminded me and we easily secured all the decor into the ground so it wouldn’t blow away!
WELL…WHAT DO YOU THINK? I love it! The only thing I’m going to do now is add a few twinkle lights around the poles on our front steps and put a battery-operated candle in each of our windows…OH YEAH…BACK TO BIG LOTS I GO! THEN…I wait for the final finishing touch…SNOW!

This year I am getting a new wreath for the front door and we are hanging one on the shed door too because you can see it from inside the house. We never took down the christmas lights so it will continue to be festive and bright. Now we just need snow…
What a great tip! Leave the Christmas lights up and just don’t turn them on! My hubby will love that idea as he is the one hanging lights 😉

Yes!!! Me too! I believe sometimes less is more! Too much and it borders on being gaudy. I prefer to get items that make a statement and compliment the house 😉

This looks really nice, I love looking at peoples light decorations. We don’t really have a yard so we don’t do anything.
We make it a point not to decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving, but who knew Big Lots had such cute stuff for really inexpensive!
